In order to be on this list, a player must not have exhausted their rookie eligibility, either this season or in the past, and must have signed with a MLB team.

"A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club."

My rankings combine scouting reports, statistical results (amateur and professional), pedigree, makeup, and personal opinion . Age and level are used only to gauge relative performance, i.e. when a player is significantly younger than most of his competitors. I do not use "closeness to the majors" as a factor in my rankings.

sorry I missed this comment. Bumgarner was probably one of my biggest 'over-ratings' - though you can't really argue against anyone ranking him that highly at the time. He has lost velocity and hitters have caught up to him at higher levels. He is going to have to learn to pitch. I don't see him as a MLB pitcher this season.

Madison Bumgarner is in AA right now.  Any chance he makes it to the Giants this summer?  Sept call-up?  Or not until 2010?  Looks like the Giants are going to have a great staff in 1-2 years.

Players have to be signed by MLB club before being eligible for this list. Steven Strasburg will be top5 easy the moment he signs.

FightinTxAggs,

I can definitely relate, I've just found the best way to evaluate and rank prospects is by using rookie eligibility. You can look at the reverse side and see guys like Brandon Wood that aren't eligible for this list because they've exhausted their eligibility, even though they might not actually be established major leaguers yet.

Price was just up for a September cup of tea (only played 14 regular season innings) and happened to help his team reach the World Series, and he's likely to start 2009 in the minors.

I actually used the black bold font on all the players, but I think if they are actually in the CBS Database they will show up with the hyperlink (typically blue). So the ones you see in bold aren't in the CBS database, or somehow aren't matching up with their database link (Rowell is in the database but shows up without a hyperlink).

I didn't intend to separate any of them or highlight them, just turns out that way when you post their names. :)

defiler,

I agree with your assessment of Castro. He "handles" pitchers well and is great at sizing-up hitters. He'll fit in well with the Astros.

He just needs to get around the MLB group that liked the intelligence of Ausmus.

He's very good at calling "sequences". None of the Astro catchers can hit much, so he should progress well. Let's hope he doesn't get too nicked up.

I know that this is just a random comment and maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but --

When reviewing prospect lists, it always looks odd to me to see an name like "David Price".

I think of him as a major leaguer now. Yes, by definition, he still fits in the prospect category.

Again, it's random. There are several names each year that just don't look like they belong. It's an apples to oranges comparison with some guys.

Oops, forgot that I had another question.

What's the significance of player names in Black BOLD font?

Thanks again?

Thanks for the clarification on Clement.

I like Castro too. I rated him very highly. However, he hasn't made it to AA ball yet. He could easily do that this year. The Astros are very thin at catcher.

I was thinking, "how can a guy that just got drafted and didn't really WOW anybody in A ball, be so high?" You answered my question.

Thanks, I enjoy reviewing your lists. Smile
